Artist Statement

My work is driven by a need to understand the world around me, or at least work through my feelings about it. Following a technically meditative approach allows me the time I need to process the strangeness. I am prone to reflecting on the details of the often crazy heart of our society, issues such as land appropriation, personal political morality, social media propaganda and algorithms.

I often use maps as a device in my work. I am fascinated by aerial photographs in general, and always interested in the idea of “land”- its shifting borders, ideas and people. I also find myself looking at a lot of ancient tribal art from around the globe. Although figurative, these early works are not tightly realistic, and hold very strong emotion. I seek to emulate this type of expression in my work.
